The College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources (CAHNR) Office of Academic Programs (OAP)
seeks a full-time, professional staff Academic Advisor (Academic Advisor 1, P3). OAP seeks a highly motivated, independent, and
team-oriented individual who can support students, faculty, and our academic partners with creative ideas. Candidates should possess
outstanding interpersonal skills and a can-do attitude. The position entails advising undergraduate students and assisting
faculty/departmental advisors with complex College-level advising of University rules and regulation concerns, assisting with activities and
events coordinated by the Office of Academic Programs, and developing/implementing special programs as needed. The incumbent is expected to
work both flexibly and collegially with a dynamic team of professional advising and administrative staff, as well as with faculty and
students across the College and the University. It is also an expectation that the incumbent advance CAHNR’s commitment to diversity,
equity, and inclusion in every aspect of their work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Serve as a resource for students, faculty, parents, and others with questions about programs or academic policies.
- Advise current, readmitted, and prospective students regarding coursework and graduation requirements; audit student records to
determine progress toward meeting academic requirements.
- Advise students regarding policies and procedures, including selection or
change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines, and related matters.
- Review and make recommendations regarding
dismissal and provide additional counseling to students on academic probation and those with academic difficulties.

- Participate in the admissions
process for the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture (RHSA), and in making admissions decisions regarding the transfer of major within or
into the College and School.
- Assist in planning and implementing scheduling and registration activities, orientation programs,
- Assist colleagues in composing and maintaining the Office’s websites, social media, and other
- Develop and participate in student recruitment and retention activities, including coordination of high
school visits, career development events, open houses, and admissions events. A special focus on recruitment and retention of traditionally
underrepresented groups and first-generation students is a goal of our College.

- Participate in planning and instruction of Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture First Year Experience course.
- Carry out special assignments and projects as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field and three years of position-related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in
providing academic support, OR Master’s degree in a related field and one year of related experience in advising and/or counseling
students or in providing academic support.
- Ability and knowledge to support STEM undergraduate students, including first-generation
college students and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.
- Experience working with people from diverse
academic, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team setting.
- Ability to independently solve problems by regularly exercising judgment regarding administrative detail and procedures.
- Communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
- Ability to build rapport with students, families, and other campus
- Ability to organize and efficiently handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office and
common social media platforms.
- Ability to work on occasional nights and weekends and travel occasionally for work purposes.
- Advanced degree in higher education, counseling, a STEM field, or related
- Advising experience in postsecondary/higher education institution(s).
- Three to five years or more of
experience advising students.
- Experience in the interpretation of academic policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Knowledge of relevant academic programs including STEM programs or majors relating to Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources.
- Experience/familiarity with Agricultural Education and Agri-science Programs.
- Knowledge of online student records software,
such as PeopleSoft (StudentAdmin).
- Experience with coordinating academic events.
