The Kogod School of Business Undergraduate Advising Team (KSB Advising) succeeds through a commitment to teamwork, collaboration with campus partners, focus on student support, and dedication to professional growth. Summary/Objective

The Academic Advisor provides high-quality academic support services to undergraduate majors and minors enrolled in the Kogod School of Business. The incumbent advises and counsels new, continuing, and non-degree students regarding their academic, professional and career goals. The Academic Advisor also provides guidance on issues that affect academic performance and monitors the academic progress of each assigned student. The incumbent participates in on-campus and external activities related to the recruitment, conversion, and retention of new and continuing undergraduate students.

The Academic Advisor reports directly to the Director of Undergraduate Programs alongside two Assistant Directors, a second Academic Advisor, and a Senior Administrative Assistant. The position requires a high level of interaction with students, faculty and other campus and external constituencies including the Office of the University Registrar, International Student and Scholar Services, AU Central, AU Abroad, Academic Support and Access Center, Counseling Center, First-Year Advising, and school-based advising teams.

Additional position responsibilities include recommending petitions for exceptions to university and AU Core requirements; determining appropriate late actions as they apply to student enrollment and registration; evaluating course equivalency of transfer credits and determining how credits are to be applied to Kogod degree requirements; determining academic actions to be applied to students based on progress toward degree completion, and making recommendations for scholarship and student achievement awards.

Essential Functions

  1. Academic Advising: Advises and counsels undergraduate students in meeting degree requirements; assists students with selection and registration of courses; addresses issues that affect academic performance; makes appropriate referrals to other university student services; communicate with faculty regarding students in academic distress; liaisons with other university departments that support athletes, international students, students of color, students with disabilities, honor students, and other students with special needs or circumstances; provides recommendations and solutions to streamline advising processes that improve students’ academic experience and address their developmental needs.
  2. Academic Progress Review: Monitors and evaluates each student’s academic progress throughout the school year; assists students with the resolution of problems that arise after periodic degree audits, change of majors, graduation, etc.; conducts degree clearance for graduating students; maintains and updates student files; reviews and confirms various data reports for campus partners.
  3. Co-curricular Programming, Special Projects, and Other Duties as Assigned: Participates actively with Kogod staff and faculty and university partners to identify and develop programs and other special initiatives that enhance the professional, intellectual, career, leadership, and personal development of undergraduate students. At the discretion of the Director of Undergraduate Programs and/or Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Student Services, participate on school-based or campus-wide committees related to university policies or processes, undergraduate student support, undergraduate student retention, or other relevant initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • This hybrid (on-campus and remote) position reports directly to the Director of Undergraduate Programs.

Work Environment

  • The Academic Advisor provides high-quality academic support services to undergraduate majors and minors enrolled in the Kogod School of Business alongside two Assistant Directors, a second Academic Advisor, and a Senior Administrative Assistant.
  • This is a critical position for Kogod given the evolving nature of the AU student body, which includes increasing numbers of first-generation students, students of color, Pell-eligible students, international students, student-athletes, and other populations of students that benefit from efficient and effective support services

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience years, preferably in higher education and student support.
  • Excellent attention to detail with strong ability to prioritize and multi-task in a dynamic and high-pressure environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and develop productive working relationships with multiple constituencies (students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents).
  • Proven ability to use current technology and information systems to analyze data, manage projects, and facilitate decision-making.
  • Outstanding oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively on a team.
  • Understanding of the organizational and governance structure of a major university.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree or equivalent.
  • 2-4 years of professional experience years, preferably in higher education and student support.
  • Experience managing academic enterprise software applications such as Colleague, CRM Advise, YouCanBook.Me, SharePoint, and Qualtrics.
