Department of Health Sciences

The Department of Health Sciences is the second largest undergraduate major at UCF. It offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences and a minor in Health Sciences. Our science-based, application-oriented curriculum is designed for students with an interest in human health who plan to pursue careers in medicine, other health professions, clinical/behavioral health research, health promotion, and public health. The major includes two tracks. Our Pre-clinical track is designed for students pursuing careers as a physician, physician assistants, dentists, pharmacists, and other healthcare careers. Our Health Promotion track is designed for students pursuing careers as physical therapists, occupational therapists, clinical/behavioral health researchers, public health specialists, and other health-related fields. Our curriculum offers several high impact practice courses taught by faculty who are skilled teachers and researchers. The Opportunity

The Department of Health Sciences in the College of Health Professions and Sciences at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is searching for an Academic Advisor II. This position provides academic advising for students majoring/minoring in health sciences. The Health Sciences major, which is the second largest undergraduate major at UCF, offers two career-focused academic tracks: pre-clinical and health promotion.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic advising and guidance to current and prospective students by appointment, walk-in, email, online video/chat, and telephone in support of student retention and graduation initiatives. Advising activities include, but are not limited to, enrollment, retention, progression, resolution of obstacles impeding academic success, graduation, and career planning.
  • Interpret degree audits and assist students with the development of an academic plan to meet graduation requirements.
  • Assist with student orientations (transfer and freshman), open houses, majors fairs, and advising workshops as they relate to the program/college.
  • Adhere to and explain academic policies and procedures.
  • Provide coaching for at-risk students and referrals/intervention services as indicated.
  • Share responsibility for handling general e-mail accounts, including responding to current and prospective student inquiries in accordance with department, college, university, and federal guidelines.
  • Maintain appropriate student records of advising sessions/student interactions using myKnight Star and other systems as appropriate. Use advising tools, campaigns, and technology to manage student data and records.
  • Process requests, as appropriate, for special advising needs (e.g., exceptions, overrides, etc.).
  • Update students via email and/or other approved strategies about upcoming events and important dates.
  • Attend meetings and serve on committees as recommended by the Chair or Program Director.
  • Assist with tracking student and alumni honors, awards, and placements.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of advising bulletin boards, handouts, and media.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous academic advising in college/university setting; working in a team setting; familiarity with advising technology platforms

Preferred skills: Excellent customer service orientation and skills; strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills; ability to follow directions and execute job responsibilities accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment; strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and work collaboratively with team members; highly proficient with the use of computer applications, including MS Office suite.
