Description of Job Duties

Job Summary:

The Academic Coach in the Academic Support Center (ASC) supports facilitated study groups, pre and post advising needs, and academic coaching of SWOSU students. The ASC Coach will be trained on advising theory and best practices as well as the programs of study for the academic department. The ASC Coach monitors early alert students and assist students in navigating academic issues. ASC Coaches will meet one-on-one with students to create a degree plan and course sequence, and checks in regularly on student progress. The ASC Coach leads and co-leads student success and engagement workshops, as well as planning and attending events for students. ASC Coaches work to support the retention and academic success of all SWOSU students, while focusing on an assigned cohort of students. These tasks are to be performed in a manner that professionally, cordially, and efficiently assist the students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

 Description Of Job Duties:

  • Provide information on university policies and procedures
  • Make referrals to appropriate campus colleagues who may be helpful with resolving issues, and sometimes facilitates the resolution of problems
  • Lead study sessions in Math or English; teaching/instructing students in or out of the classroom as assigned
  • Work with Director to develop workshops and enhance curricular offerings
  • Lead students and peer mentors in classroom instruction and management
  • Assist students in developing an academic plan and semester course schedules
  • Assist in instructing a first-year experience course
  • Consistently reach out to students to support retention and academic success
  • Assist in data collection efforts and assist the unit in self-assessment efforts
  • Advocate for students with other university departments
  • Support diversity and inclusion on campus

Terms of Employment: 

  • Employment at will
  • Grant funded position
  • Reports to Academic Support Center Director
  • Safety and job-related trainings will be completed as instructed
  • Wage to be established by SWOSU’s wage structure
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required    
  • Strong time management and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of campus constituencies
  • Comfortable assisting with student work in online platforms
  • Experience in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or other closely related field
