Job Description

Barrett, The Honors College at the Downtown campus is seeking an Academic Success Advisor who is able to work in a team environment. Barrett prides itself with offering honors students attention tailored toward their individual goals, and the successful candidate will share this philosophy. This position will report to the Academic Success Advising Coordinator and will support initiatives and objectives related to the unique honors college experience.


Salary Range

$35,163 – $45,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Advise a high volume of students on the ASU and Barrett honors curriculum requirements and maintain detailed student records
  • Explain academic policies and procedures
  • Provide walk-in advising and assistance to all students in Barrett on a daily basis
  • Inform students of co-curricular opportunities and resources university-wide, that match their individual interests and goals
  • Monitor student progress in completing the Barrett honors requirements including pulling and analyzing data
  • Inform students of the honors thesis/creative project process through in-person advising, workshops, and online tools
  • Participate in projects that include: assisting incoming students with ASU New Student Orientations; leading Barrett information sessions throughout the year; assisting with Barrett graduation procedures; interacting with other Barrett administration, faculty and staff within the college and throughout the ASU and external community
  • Participate in college committees, and attend college and university events including (but not limited to) Convocation, Fall Welcome, Parents Weekend, and academic-related workshops
  • Complete special projects and duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a master’s degree preferred
  • Experience in working with honors students in an academic or related student services field in a higher education environment. (Honors experience preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of university curriculum requirements and student development theory
  • Experience in working in a fast-paced environment with high volume student traffic
  • Experience working one-on-one with students
  • Experience in work that requires attention to detail and self-motivated 
  • Experience in problem-solving
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills 
  • Experience in using Office Applications (i.e. Word, Excel and Outlook); PeopleSoft; DARS, data analysis, ASU Analytic Reports or similar data reporting systems


Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time, walk moderate distances, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds to perform work
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Communicate to perform essential functions
  • Use office equipment such as calculator, telephone, computer (monitor, keyboard and mouse), printer, fax and copier
  • This position receives regular review of objectives
