Position Overview

The Assistant Director of Student Success: Tutoring & Math Center leads the day-to-day
operations of math tutoring for the entire college and works as part of a team within the Tutoring and Math Center and Writing Center. S/he
assists the Director in the management of a drop-in tutoring center where students in all programs and from all majors receive support in
their studies of mathematics and math-related courses. Responsibilities include tutoring; mentoring and training Peer (student) Tutors and
Student Workers; coordinating and presenting campus workshops; assisting with data collection, record-keeping, and report preparation;
assisting with other tasks essential to the day-to-day operation of the Center; training and supervising peer math tutors, and professional
tutors; and mentoring and advising Merrimack students. S/he will also teach within our First Year Experience course each fall. In this
capacity, the Assistant Director helps to provide invaluable assistance in the retention of Merrimack students and in the nurturing of our
student employees to enhance academic excellence in mathematics and related fields on campus. This is a full-time 12-month administrative

  • Support and assist the
    Director of the Writing, Tutoring & Math Centers in achieving strategic and operational initiatives;
  • Serve as Professional
    Tutor, tutoring student visitors and mentoring Peer (student) Tutors and Student Workers;
  • Participate in the training and
    evaluation of Peer Tutors and Student Workers;
  • Support a welcoming environment for student visitors and a sense of community among
    the members of the Tutoring & Math Center team;
  • Assist with scheduling, planning, and implementing all tutor training;
  • Facilitate campus workshops on mathematics and study-skill related topics (presenting, advertising, scheduling, preparing materials,
    maintaining data on participation, summarizing workshop surveys, and assisting with workshop development);
  • Provide assistance with
    preparation of reports including, but not limited to, regular faculty reports and annual reports;
  • Represent the Tutoring & Math
    Center at meetings, open houses, orientations, etc.;
  • Support the retention efforts of the Academic Success Center by mentoring and
    advising students as an administrative mentor, serving as a First Year Experience (FYE) instructor, and/or academic coach, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


The Assistant Director must have in-depth
knowledge of college-level mathematics, the ability to learn unfamiliar concepts and techniques quickly, and the ability and temperament to
work with students with a variety of learning styles, abilities, and/or disabilities. The ideal candidate would have experience teaching
and/or tutoring, preferably in higher education, as well as experience in a management/leadership position.

The Assistant Director
must have excellent leadership and communication skills, must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and be familiar with
or be willing to learn Canvas; Google Docs, Sheets, Calendar, and Forms; Doodle Poll and other web-based tools; iPad applications such as
Explain Everything; and mathematics and/or statistical computer software such as Mathematica, Minitab, R, and PHStat.

A Master’s
degree or above in mathematics or a mathematics-related field is required.
