Job Description Summary

It is the academic mission of the George Washington University’s School of Business (GWSB) to be a preeminent business school recognized for scholarly research, teaching excellence, innovative curricula and focused on the responsible management of organizations in the global environment. In support of this mission, the GWSB Office of Undergraduate Programs is searching for an Assistant Director, Undergraduate Advising. This individual is a key contributor to the success of the Undergraduate Programs Office.

This position reports to the Executive Director of Undergraduate Programs within the Office of Undergraduate Programs in the School of Business, a fast-paced office setting that delivers year-round academic advising and co-curricular opportunities to undergraduate students and to students throughout the enrollment cycle – from newly admitted students to alumni. This position serves on the leadership team will supervise three staff member as well as student employees.

The Assistant Director, Undergraduate Advising manages the daily operations of the Advising Center by ensuring staff coverage at the reception area as well as the availability and scheduling of academic advisors. This individual is also required to teach in our Business Leader Development Program and participate in co-curricular programs as needed. This management position oversees the delivery of academic advising services to students by managing the daily operations of an undergraduate or graduate advising unit, ensures staff coverage for students, and protects the privacy of student records per regulations. This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff directly, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance and determines future staffing needs

Specific responsibilities are:

  • Monitors academic progress, provides academic advising; reviews and evaluates students’ completion of degree requirements; enforces academic policies and procedures, refers students to necessary resources on campus for a caseload of students.
  • Researches and resolves unusual and complex problems and requests concerning students. Confers with the Executive Director of Undergraduate Advising and Programs on special student situations.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate graduate assistants and undergraduate student employees who support the mission of the Undergraduate Programs Office.
  • Manages communications from the Office of Undergraduate Programs including, but not limited to newsletters, Countdown to Commencement notifications for seniors, messaging for incoming and current students through Salesforce, social media, and vice dean communications. Reviews and updates content of the GWSB Undergraduate Programs website to ensure accuracy of information.
  • Resolves and updates scheduling and registration issues for undergraduates with the Registrar’s Office, GWSB faculty, and departments.
  • Represents GWSB Undergraduate Advising on committees and serve as a liaison to other offices across campus.
  • Oversees the development and management of all information in the GWSB Office of Undergraduate Advising: student files, GWDocuments, network drive and Box.
  • Prepare reports as needed, and protects the privacy of student records per FERPA requirements and GW policies.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director of Undergraduate Programs leadership teams, design and deliver training programs for staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in an academic setting, including one year of experience disseminating academic information and evaluating student records.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Supervisory experience working with co-curricular programs and teaching are strongly preferred.
  • Experience and broad understanding of the diverse administrative functions and technical problems involved in a busy, student service office at a private university. Demonstrated ability to work independently or collaboratively in a high volume, team-oriented environment.
  • Self-starter demonstrating initiative and creativity in a fast-paced collaborative, team-oriented higher education environment. A demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure to meet deadlines. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with a diverse university population at all levels, facilitate decision making and conflict resolution, maintain a positive and constructive demeanor treating all staff, students, faculty with professionalism, courtesy and respect.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly. Strong knowledge of MS Office and other software.

Typical Hiring Range
$50,680.12 – $73,425.44
