Salary Range: $4,304.00/month to $6,120.00/month. PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $4,304.00/month to $5,212.00/month.

About the Position

This position is a team member of the College of Business & Economics (CBE) Office of Undergraduate Advising, which provides services that support and promote student success.

This position provides comprehensive graduation-related service, advice and developmental guidance for all current and returning upper division students with majors and minors in CBE. This position provides students with accurate, timely advising and evaluation of coursework as applicable to the completion of their major, general education, and university graduation requirements. Advising at the Concord campus or representation at events held at other institutions may at times be required.

This position will also work closely with the director of the CBE Office of Undergraduate Advising in training SSP I advisors, facilitating transfer orientation, and facilitating group advising/workshops and may visit classes for such purposes.



  • Provide comprehensive major-related, general education, and university requirement services, advice and developmental guidance for upper division students with majors and minors in the College of Business & Economics.
  • Responsible for a caseload of students; monitoring and assessing students’ progress to degree; identify current and potential roadblocks and make appropriate referrals to campus resources.
  • Inform students about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses, change of program, major and/or transfer institution).
  • Promote the advisor-advisee relationship by effectively using the various tools of communication, including email, text, phone, face-to-face/virtual meetings, and electronic advising notes.
  • Create and maintain student files including documenting all appointments and student interactions with appropriate notes, utilizing available technology (i.e. Bay Advisor, PeopleSoft, Zoom, Google Suite, Microsoft Office programs).
  • Assist students in undergraduate registration services for CBE. These include, but are not limited to: add/drop, waitlist verification, special registration petitions for independent and individual study, withdrawal, retroactive withdrawal and late registration petitions. 
  • Work closely with Pioneer Success Coaches to facilitate the success of our high concern undergraduate cohort for Cal State East Bay within the College of Business & Economics.
  • Plan and run group advising sessions targeting specific groups (i.e. new transfers, graduating, or returning students) and addressing their advising needs.
  • Outreach to targeted groups of students as part of graduation initiatives, campaigns, or because of high risk markers to assist them in getting back on track toward their educational goals.
  • Abide by all ethical, professional (i.e. Appreciative Advising) and educational (i.e. FERPA) standards related to educational advising and counseling, and demonstrate sound professional judgment when making decisions related to students, CBE, CSUEB and related stakeholders. 


  • Actively participate in managing registration processes each term and finding ways to improve procedures.
  • Make determinations on applicability or military, test, and course transfer credit to major requirements and document them (TES, CBE Office of Undergraduate Advising databases) for use as references in CBE.
  • Process and deliver major evaluations of transferable credit to all new CBE transfer students within established deadlines.
  • Determine graduation eligibility and complete final major and/or minor checks, assessing academic documents, assisting students in appropriate appeal processes, and advising on required requirements via one on one meetings, phone, email, and message communications.


  • Act as liaison for outside campus departments to provide evaluation and advising services directly to their student populations.
  • Serve as liaison to student organizations associated with CBE.
  • Actively participate and represent CBE at University and College events, during regular office hours and occasionally after hours or on weekends.


  • Responsible for participating in on and off campus university events, such as New Student Orientation, Commencement, Preview Day and Welcome Day, which will require occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Trains advisor, administrative support staff and student assistants as needed.
  • Attends department/college meetings. Also attend workshops and training sessions, and participate in conference calls and webinars, as necessary
  • Contribute to the overall success of the CBE Office of Undergraduate Advising by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of student success effective academic advising practices in higher education.
  • Experience in determining courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
  • Ability to initiate, implement, and troubleshoot existing and new departmental policies and programs.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, via technology or in person.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Cultural sensitivity when interacting with a very diverse population of students and faculty
  • Flexibility and willingness to respond to other duties as assigned.
  • Excellent technical skills, such as expertise with a variety of university software systems, such as PeopleSoft, EAB Navigate, as well as database, website and spreadsheet programs. 

Minimum Qualifications


Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.


Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
