Required Qualifications: (As evidenced by an attached resume)
Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time experience in academic advising, counseling, teaching or student services at the college or university level working with undergraduates. Experience coordinating projects, programs, and/or events.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling, or related discipline. Experience teaching new student seminars or student-development related courses. Academic advising experience. Working knowledge of PeopleSoft.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Academic Advisor provides academic advising to students in the assigned Undergraduate College and takes the lead on administrative and programming issues related to the Undergraduate College. The Academic Advisor teaches the first-year seminar course (SBU 101), the College Fellows courses and supervises student interns. This position is an active leader in developing the Undergraduate College program, assisting with the orientation and registration process, developing curriculum for the first-year seminars, developing and implementing advising strategies, planning activities and events throughout the year, and building connections with faculty, staff, and students constituents. This position provides a significant link to students transitioning to their first year of college and serves to strengthen student satisfaction and retention. The Academic Advisor also coordinates specific functional activities or projects related to student success and organizational goals. Incumbent must possess outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving; strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.

Duties:

  • Academic Advising: Provide high quality, pro-active academic advising to first-year students in the Undergraduate College. Such advising will occur in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis throughout the first year, and will include regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements, and policies and procedures. Monitor course enrollment and academic progress. Provide active support, follow-up and strategies for success to first-year students on academic action. Serve as a general walk-in academic advisor for all Undergraduate Colleges as needed. Support the training and development of Academic Advising Assistants via communicating policy, procedure, curricular and other relevant knowledge.
  • Project Coordinator: Coordinate a functional assignment(s) within the unit toward departmental goals. Examples may include seminar coordination, in-depth work with a specific student population, curriculum involvement, faculty/academic department collaborations, peer leadership opportunities, orientation, academic standing, or other operation, service, project, or retention-enhancing initiative.
  • College Administration: In collaboration with campus residences staff and other campus partners, coordinate the planning and development of team meetings, training and activities within the Undergraduate College. Manage the administrative tasks for the assigned Undergraduate College, including programming, special initiatives, and budget. Manage student participation in events for the assigned Undergraduate College.
  • New Student Seminar Instruction: Provide instruction for first-year seminars. Teach the two-semester course sequence for the Undergraduate College Fellows program. Serve as coordinator for the first-year seminar instructors, including acting as point person for attendance, grading and behavioral concerns. Contribute to the development of all materials and training related to the first-year seminar. Serve as the task supervisor for Undergraduate College interns.
  • Orientation and Registration: Assist in the coordination and implementation of registration sessions for new first-year students in the Undergraduate College. Coordinate the registration of new first-year students in the Undergraduate College. Collaborate with the Registrar, orientation office, and all specialized advising programs in registering new students in the Undergraduate Colleges. Supervise the student enrollment assistants in the summer. Coordinate the planning of new student orientation and opening week programs including the development planning and implementation of Undergraduate College activities.
  • Program Development and Event Planning: Participate in initiating, planning, and developing events and activities which build community and support academic success. Participate in one or more office committees. Participate in various University programs and services including training/staff development, campus events, special events, admissions open houses, search committees, and University-wide committees.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
