MINIMUM PAY RATE: $43,672 annually

POSITION SUMMARY
The Adult Education and Literacy Specialist assists in the support and development of the HSE/ESL program which includes orientations for new students, providing resources for teachers and students, software administrator, student advising, volunteer tutor training, student retention, and the identification of career pathways that enable adult students to make a successful transition to post-secondary, education, training or employment. Documents client participation and progress as specified by funding sources and collaborates with Workforce Education staff to identify and create process efficiencies where appropriate.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Support the program with testing and assessment orientations and sessions. Provide ongoing assessment training for proctors, staff, teachers, and administration. Create processes for testing based on all grant requirements.
2. Consult with students on schedule changes, test scores, resources, and educational goals.
3. Advise students on long-term college and career goals. Create student workshops to meet the demands of a changing work force and learning environment.
4. Provide support to students, instructors, and staff on technology implementation. Establish, update, and maintain software for HSE/ESL students. Maintain the department’s shared database.
5. Initiate and implement retention and recruitment activities.
6. Provide Adult Volunteer Literacy assessments. Assist in volunteer tutor training.
7. Assist the program manager on program needs, class schedules, and future needs
8. Assist in job fairs, job search expos, and outreach and recruitment activities; design and deliver all aspects of the marketing, orientation, and selection steps of the outreach and recruitment phase of the project. Represent department by working with community partners.
9. Perform follow-up tasks as required by funding sources and others; make recommendations and/or take actions to improve performance measures and to ensure positive outcomes for grant reporting. Assist with various reports, funding applications, and other documents/projects as needed.
10. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.
2. Three (3) years of experience in higher education.
3. Two (2) years of experience working with disadvantaged adults and families.
4. Knowledge of Illinois Adult Education and High School Equivalency (GED) program requirements.
5. Excellent public speaking and written communication skills.
6. Effective interpersonal, communication, time and project management and organizational skills
7. Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
8. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.
9. Demonstrated commitment to the college’s core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Teaching, counseling/advisement experience at college level.
2. Experience providing classroom instruction to adult learners.
3. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
4. Demonstrated multicultural competence.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Normal office physical demands.
2. Ability to travel between campus locations and to and from community events.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.

Internal candidates must adhere to the terms of employment regarding length of time in current position as outlined in their union contract.
