Summary
The University of Michigan-Dearborn has an exciting
opportunity for an Academic Advisor at the START (Student Advising and Resource Team) office. START advisors work with all new freshmen,
undecided students, and transfer students from three of the University’s academic units (College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, College of
Engineering and Computer Science, and College of Education, Health, and Human Services). This position will have a focus on advising
incoming students from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL). CASL is home to traditional liberal arts and science majors, such
as English, Psychology, and Biology, as well as interdisciplinary majors like Criminology and Criminal Justice and Women’s and Gender
Studies. START advisors meet with students during new student orientations, and maintaining regular contact with assigned students via
scheduled appointments, group advising, email advising, and during drop-in hours. As a START advisor you may be asked to provide general
advising to students beyond those assigned to you. You will need to have a working knowledge of university policies, including the Dearborn
Discovery Core.
Responsibilities*
- Provide academic advising to undergraduate students on course selection,
curriculum requirements, registration deadlines, college and university policies, and campus resources - Provide accurate information,
advice and counsel regarding academic/career options - Assist in administering advising programs designed for specific students, such
as probationary students - Provide academic orientation to incoming undergraduate students
- Make appropriate referrals to
support services area - Represent START at academic functions, to both internal and external audiences
- Other related duties as
assigned
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor’s degree in related field
- A minimum of two years’
experience in advising/counseling or higher education administration - Strong oral and written communication skills and a commitment
to detail-oriented accuracy - Ability to balance multiple tasks, work under pressure at peak times, and set priorities
- Ability
to exercise initiative and work independently - Positive, service-oriented approach to tasks, and an eagerness to assist
students - Ability to learn new skills, use new technologies, and understand new policies
Desired
Qualifications*
- Bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts or science field
- Master’s degree in higher education or student
affairs - Familiarity with higher education and knowledge of student development theory
- Experience with or willingness to
learn how liberal arts majors connect with careers - Working knowledge of Banner, Degree Works, and Salesforce
